U.S. Senator Bill Cassidy, along with Senator Tim Kaine, has introduced a new bill aimed at combating illegal fishing practices and the global trade of endangered species. The Protecting Global Fisheries Act seeks to enhance U.S. authority in enforcing maritime laws alongside international partners to address illegal and unregulated fishing. This bill also gives the president power to sanction foreign vessels and individuals involved in the violation of these laws or in the trafficking of endangered species.
Cassidy emphasized that illegal fishing threatens Louisiana's vital seafood industry, which generates $2.4 billion annually. The bill is designed to protect jobs, ensure fair competition, and preserve marine ecosystems. It targets activities such as fishing without licenses, falsifying reports, and using prohibited gear. By curbing these practices, the legislation aims to safeguard local economies, support national security, and defend industries like Louisiana’s shrimping, which has been affected by an influx of imported seafood.
