WHILE U.S. AUTHORITIES KEEP UNDER DISCUSSION THE CLOSURE OF WILD SALMON FISHERIES IN ALASKA AND OREGON, CANADA ONES SET A DEADLINE FOR NET-PEN SALMON FARMING IN BRITISH COLUMBIA, OF 5 YEARS.

There is a relationship within above two measures: the protection of wild species but clearly focusing on wild Pacific salmon, which population has been found  at critical volumes during 2022 and 2023.

This is a severe law that has the objective of forcing the big farming companies to move to land based facilities and start RAS (recirculating aquaculture system) operations. The latest day for the current way of farming (net pens at open ocean) would be June 30th, 2029; this one, in opinion of authorities and research done by scientists, is spreading diseases to several fish species of the area, including wild salmon, which population has been decreasing during the last years.

Of course many producers have criticized the new regulation, arguing that more investigation would be needed before taking such a decision, that would cause not only bigger farming costs but can increase unemployment rates and create conflicts with indigenous communities that were cooperating in the aquaculture activities in this zone.
