PERU OFFICIALLY CLOSES NORTH-CENTRAL ANCHOVY FISHING SEASON

After several weeks of uncertainty, and now under the new administration of IMARPE, Peruvian authorities have made a final decision and officially closed the 2026 First Anchovy Fishing Season in the North-Central region.

The decision followed the results of the EUREKA LXXVIII scientific operation led by IMARPE, which found a high incidence of juveniles: 65% in number, with fish sizes ranging from 6 to 15 cm and a main mode of 11 cm.

Reproductive indicators showed a gradual recovery but remained below historical levels, while the anchovy population continued to show a low somatic condition due to unfavorable environmental conditions associated with the current El Niño scenario.

Based on these findings, the Peruvian Government adopted a precautionary approach and officially closed the season in order to protect the anchovy stock and ensure the sustainability of the resource.
