Peru’s 2025 Anchovy Season Advances, But Weather and Ocean Conditions Raise Concerns

Peru’s first anchovy fishing season of 2025 in the North-Central region has reached 79.1% of its 3 million metric ton (MT) Total Allowable Catch (TAC), with around 2.374 million MT landed so far, according to Peruvian Ministry of Production (July 13th). While early signs were promising, recent developments have raised concerns about completing the quota.

Over the past month, landings never recovered the trend to higher levels; vessels continued exploration, looking for richer grounds, but unsuccessful results caused them to continue catching small, unprofitable volumes each day, because oceanographic conditions remain challenging: Stormy weather persists, and high-salinity oceanic waters—which can cause anchovies to disperse or dive deeper—are still dominating large areas between Chimbote and Callao.

This latest figure and the fact that July is usually the last month of the first anchovy campaign of the year has changed the target quantity for this season:

Now fishing companies are thinking of 2.5 million fish anchovy instead of the optimistic 3 million tons of the first weeks.
