Chile bets on Fortuno

Chile, globally known for its net sea pen salmon production, is now studying a new system: RAS (Recirculating Aquaculture System), that is the new dimension for inshore fish farming. The target species is a kind of marine fish very popular in many countries including Japan (where is called “yellow tail” and pew, where called Fortuno, a fish of the Seriola genus, known for being more resilient and easier to farm than salmon.

Miguel Martin, a systems designer at Innovasea and Chilean expert in RAS technologies, said, “Global perception of animal protein has shifted. It’s no longer just about price and quality – origin, environmental impact, and certifications are now essential.”

Fortuno, which requires less intensive management and adapts well to closed systems, is emerging as a promising option for sustainable aquaculture in Chile.
